A DISCOURSE WITH DR. PAUL CAMMER, ONE OF THE BEST BIOLOGY TEACHERS IN THE UNITED STATES


Paul Cammer 博士,科学家级的中学老师,美国托马斯•杰弗逊科技高中科学实验室原主任、全美最优秀生物学科教师,美国TJ 科技高中iBET课程创始人,热衷于带领学生开展高级实验室项目研究; 受聘为上海托马斯实验学校战略规划主任、科学实验指导主任。10月28-29日,Paul Cammer博士来到上海托马斯实验学校进行了全方位立体式指导。


Dr. Paul Cammer, a high school science teacher, former director of science laboratory of Thomas Jefferson Technology High School (TJ), the one of the best biology teachers in the US, and the founder of TJ’s iBET program, is keen to lead students to conduct advanced laboratory project research. He is the director of strategic planning and the director of scientific experimentation at Shanghai Thomas School. On October 28 and 29, Dr. Paul Cammer came to Shanghai Thomas School for a full range of academic guidance.

A Demo Class Without Answer


10月28日上午, Dr. Paul Cammer给上海托马斯实验学校的全体师生展示了一堂精彩绝伦的示范课。可以说,这堂示范课具备了一切优秀课堂教学的特质:幽默的语言,尊重的态度,层层深入的问题引导……学生们的思维跟随着Paul的节奏被逐步地打开。更为有趣的是,Dr. Cammer激发学生充分的讨论,但所有的问题都没有给出所谓的标准答案。他想传递给我们的理念是:课堂,是帮助孩子们思考、讨论的场所;是让思维激荡、智慧碰撞的圣地。一节没有答案的展示课,为托马斯全体老师带来了一场关于生物学科思维教学的饕餮盛宴!


On the morning of October 28th, Dr. Paul Cammer presented a wonderful demo class to all the teachers and students of Shanghai Thomas School. This demo class bore all the qualities of excellent class teaching: humorous language, respectful attitude, and in-depth leading questions. The students' thinking was gradually activated by following Paul's steps. More interestingly, Dr. Cammer motivated the students to have discussion and debate, but there was no standardized answer to the questions. The idea he wanted to pass to us is that the classroom is a place to help students think and discuss. It is a modern Socratic forum for all wisdom to spark. A demo class with no specific answers or formulas, one that encourages students to speak and debate, is a treat and inspiration for all the teachers of Shanghai Thomas School!

How to Be a Good Student?

示范课之后,Dr. Cammer跟学生们就 “如何做一名好学生”进行了深入交流。交流中,他首先提出了预习与自学的重要性。他指出,充分的预习能更有效地提升学习效能与思维品质;而伴随着自学能力的增强,当学生成为独立自主的学习者,摆脱对老师教学的依赖,学会思考、探索自己未知的领域,学会解决实际生活问题时,真正有效的学习就开始发生了。而这些能力与品质都是成为一名优秀学生的必备条件。同时,Dr. Cammer 还指出学习过程中团队协作能力的培养也至关重要……与会学生们都频频点头,感到受益匪浅。


After the demo class, Dr. Cammer had a lecture with the students on “how to be a good student”. In the lecture, he first proposed the importance of study skills. He pointed out that adequate preparation improves learning efficiency and thinking quality to a large extent. With the enhancement of self-learning ability, students will become independent learners, rely on themselves rather than the teachers, and learn to think and explore the own unknown fields, in short, learn to learn. When solving practical problems, an effective learner begins to blossom. These abilities and qualities are essential to becoming a good student. At the same time, Dr. Cammer also pointed out that the development of teamwork skills in the learning process is crucial. The students who attended the lecture were eager to listen to Dr. Cammer and felt it was helpful to the growth of their study skills and lives as students.

The Instruction of The Advanced Laboratories Construction


10月28日下午,Dr. Cammer参观了上海托马斯新校区,周寰校长等一行人随行。过程中,李峰、周晨、郝行行等老师详细介绍了学校对未来高级实验室的规划和建设现状。Dr. Cammer 在参观了工程实验室和机器人实验室后,针对实验室能源供应与废水处理等问题提出了自己的想法和建议。在稍后的座谈中,他分享了美国TJ实验室的照片和学生做实验的经历,为未来上海托马斯科技特色高中的创建提出了建设性的意见,并针对K-12学校STEM课程建设给出了自己宝贵的经验和因地制宜的本土化设想。


On the afternoon of October 28th, Dr. Cammer visited the new campus of Shanghai Thomas school, accompanied by deputy principal Zhou and other staff. Li Feng, Zhou Chen, Hao Xingxing, the science and technology teachers, gave a detailed introduction to the school's current planning and construction of advanced laboratories. After visiting the engineering and robotics laboratories, Dr. Cammer presented his suggestions for laboratory power supply and wastewater treatment. In a later discussion, he shared photos of TJ labs and students' experiments, and made constructive comments on the future development of Shanghai Thomas School and the construction of K-12 school STEM curriculum. His valuable experience and ideas about how to tailor TJ’s elements to the local conditions gave many teachers ideas and hopes for the future of our school.

Open Class and Instructions on Teaching


10月29日,正值上海托马斯教学展示周,许浩与郑清华两位老师分别进行了生物学科与AP数学的公开教学展示。两位老师的课堂思维缜密、激情洋溢;启发式教学方式更是让学生们全情投入,收获满满。全体老师进班观摩,Dr. Cammer结合两节课在教师发展方面为大家提出了中肯的建议。在稍后的自由交流中,老师们就中美教育模式对比、教育理念、教育心得等方面与Cammer博士开展了交流与讨论。整个过程气氛积极而热烈,大家都感到收获很大。Dr. Cammer最后预祝上海托马斯实验学校在不久的将来取得非凡的成功。


学校执行校长就STEM特色课程建设、PBL项目学习及教师培训指导,也与Dr. Cammer进行了长时间的讨论交流。对话教学大师, 比较中外教育,拓宽国际化视野。上海托马斯人,将中西方先进的教育理念与教学方法不断融合,相信在不久的将来,我们一定能以兼容并蓄、脚踏实地的态度和扎根本土、面向世界的行动,建设一所充满创新的伟大学校,为中国基础教育的未来发展贡献我们的不竭力量!


On October 29th, during the Shanghai Thomas School open class week, Xu Hao and Zheng Qinghua respectively provided open teaching demonstrations of AP biology and AP mathematics. The two teachers both carried out their class in a meticulous and passionate way. The heuristic teaching method is to let the students fully engaged in thinking and learning. All the teachers visited the class. Later on, Dr. Cammer, based on the two lessons, gave critical and sincere advice for the development of teachers, and the teachers had an esoteric discourse with Dr. Cammer on the comparison of educational models and core concepts between China and the US. The whole discussion was positive, and everyone gained insight into their own teaching. Finally, Dr.Cammer wished us well. He thinks the success of Shanghai Thomas School is coming in the near future.


The school's executive principal, also had a long discussion with Dr. Cammer on STEM course construction, PBL, and teacher training program. It was a dialogue between two virtuosos of education of a comparison between Chinese education and US education. The two of them both benefited greatly from the broad horizon of international education.


The Shanghai Thomas School staff will continue to integrate the exceptionally advanced educational concepts and teaching methods into their future classes. We believe that, in the near future, we will be able to build a great school, full of innovations with all the students possessing an attitude and an ability to be virtuous, scholarly and globally engaged. We will definitely contribute our part to the future development of China's primary and secondary education.
